Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At Millbrook Primary, our curriculum is embedded in ambition, inclusivity and breadth. We believe that all children can achieve and every pupil is recognised as a unique individual, valued as part of our school and wider community.

Our curriculum ensures strong foundations in reading, writing, mathematics and oracy, enabling pupils to access learning confidently across all subjects. It is carefully designed to be broad, balanced and sequenced, allowing pupils to revisit prior knowledge, make essential links and apply their understanding to new learning.

Community involvement is central to our intent. Through engaging learning experiences, cultural capital opportunities, and participation in school and community events, pupils develop resilience, confidence and independence. They grow into lifelong learners who are curious, creative and ambitious.

The Millbrook curriculum is inclusive and embedded in meeting the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND, disabilities, gifts and talents, and those learning English as an additional language. Our staff monitor progress carefully and adapt provision so that every child is stretched and supported.

Implementation

The implementation of our curriculum is embedded and consistent across subjects and phases. Knowledge and skills are mapped progressively, allowing pupils to know more, remember more and apply their learning effectively. Teachers plan systematically, drawing on cross-curricular links to strengthen pupils’ understanding and memory.

Staff deliver the curriculum with embedded subject knowledge and high expectations. Adaptive teaching ensures that pupils with different needs, abilities and backgrounds are included, challenged and supported appropriately. Assessment for learning is purposeful and used to identify next steps, address misconceptions and secure progress.

Our curriculum is enriched with opportunities to develop cultural capital, preparing pupils for life in modern Britain and the wider world. Pupils are encouraged to contribute to their community, develop as responsible citizens and learn how to be healthy, safe, included and respected.

The metaphor at the heart of our approach — “the seeds we plant today will grow throughout a child’s life” — reflects our commitment to long-term impact. Every experience, skill and value is intentionally embedded to support pupils both now and in their futures.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is embedded and consistent. Pupils achieve well across the curriculum, with outcomes that prepare them for the next stage of their education. They leave Millbrook as:

  • Effective contributors, who can collaborate, solve problems and add value to their communities.

  • Confident individuals, who communicate clearly, make informed decisions and show resilience.

  • Successful learners, who can recall, apply and build on prior knowledge across subjects.

  • Responsible citizens, who are kind, inclusive, respectful and aware of global opportunities.

Pupils demonstrate personal qualities that are embedded throughout their learning: they are healthy and active, safe and nurtured, included and respected, and enabled to reach their full potential.

By the time they leave Millbrook, pupils are well-prepared academically, socially and emotionally, with the embedded knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to thrive in the future.
